Before their worldwide
popularity the
Boerboel
was and still is used for guarding families and live stock in Southern
Africa. They do it very well!
Boerboels
come in deferent sizes and colors. The most common colors are fawn,
brindle, red, black, white and a mixture of these colors. The average
weight of a male Boerboel is around 130 to 170 pounds and a female
around 110 to 140 pounds of very quick agile muscle.
There are weight and size standards that are
suggested for a Boerboel, but only in the past few years were brindle,
black or white Boerboels considered to be pure.
Boerboels
do come in larger and smaller sizes for some dogs like humans are
just bigger or just a little small for what their average size should
be. If
your Boerboel does not fit the recommended standards, dont get to
concerned for it only means that you might have a runt, smaller
or bigger dog.
At
this size it could be a gentle family pet or a dangerous dog. A
Boerboel temperament
is one not to
be taken lightly.
Boerboels
start testing their owners at a young age. Owners must show who
is the Alfa once they see signs of aggressive behavior. Some owners
mistake this behavior for cute playful banter, which in the long
run will become a problem.
Around
six months of age they become dominant and very protective of their
territory. Socializing and training is highly recommended at this
point. Owners must be strong and stern with their dogs because Boerboels
who are aggressive by nature will bite when they feel challenged
or if think someone to be a threat.
Owners
should be careful when socializing their Boerboel with other dogs
for being a dominant breed they have tendencies to dominate other
dogs which can lead to a fight especially in breeding dogs. Breeding
males and females will fight for dominance or bragging rights, so
please be aware before taking the steps to becoming a
Boerboel breeder
. The
Boerboel breed
is a very social
dog and does not like to be alone. They enjoy human company or another
dog.
Best
of all, Boerboels are a very loyal family pet. They are great with
children. They are easily trained and respond well to their owners.
They are a very energetic and playful dog who needs lots of exercise.
Anyone
interested in owning one of these magnificent creatures should research
them and understand as much of the breed before they introduce it
to the family. Boerboels are not the dog for everyone. Please do
your homework before you make any plans on getting a Boerboel. For
